Modern Dance is the flagship dance CCA style in Singapore primary and secondary schools. If your daughter is in (or aiming for) a Modern Dance CCA, our studio classes are designed specifically to complement and extend her school training.
We are the resident Modern Dance CCA coach at 35+ MOE schools including Methodist Girls’ (CCA), Nanyang Girls’ High (Chinese Dance — different stream, but our students cross over), Pasir Ris Crest, Ngee Ann Secondary, ACS Barker Road, Edgefield, and many more.
If your daughter dances at school, there’s a real chance her current school dance coach is on the EV Dance team.
What modern dance is (and isn’t)
Modern dance, as taught in Singapore schools, is NOT the same as contemporary dance. Modern dance is a 20th-century technique-based form with specific vocabulary (Graham, Limón, Horton influences). In MOE schools, “Modern Dance” CCAs use this technical base combined with choreographic interpretation for performances and SYF.
It’s NOT ballet (different vocabulary, different musicality), and it’s NOT hip hop (different stylistic intent).
It’s the form that the Singapore school dance ecosystem is built around. SYF Distinctions are heavily concentrated in Modern Dance CCAs.
What kids learn
Ages 7-9 (Foundation Modern Dance) – Modern dance vocabulary basics — contraction-release, fall-recovery – Centre work – Choreographic group pieces – Musicality and dynamics
Ages 10-12 (Intermediate) – Stronger technical work — Graham/Horton vocabulary – Composition exercises (kids learn to choreograph themselves) – Performance work – Preparation for SYF if their school CCA enters
Ages 13-16 (Teen Modern Dance + DSA Track) – Full Modern Dance repertoire – Choreographic creativity – SYF / competition preparation – DSA-Dance audition track for kids targeting top secondary school admissions via Modern Dance
Why this matters for school CCAs and DSA
If your daughter is in a Modern Dance CCA at a Singapore school, regular EV Dance studio classes: – Deepen her technical foundation beyond what CCA time alone provides – Prepare her for SYF if her school enters – Support DSA-Dance applications if she aims at top secondary schools via dance (MGS, SCGS, RGS Modern Dance pathways, PLMGSS, CHIJ schools)
