Jazz dance is the technique foundation behind almost every commercial dance form your child sees — Broadway, music videos, K-pop, contemporary, and street jazz all draw from jazz technique. At EV Dance we teach kids jazz dance with proper technical grounding, not just “fun choreography to pop music.”

What kids learn
Foundation (ages 7-9) – Jazz vocabulary basics — isolations, pivot turns, jazz walks – Posture and alignment work that transfers to all other dance forms – Group choreography in jazz style – Performance presence — facing the audience deliberately
Intermediate (ages 10-12) – Sharper technique — clean turns (pirouette, attitude turn), leaps – Centre work — combinations across the floor – Performance pieces with theatrical narrative – Introduction to jazz styles (Broadway, lyrical, contemporary jazz)
Advanced / Teen (ages 13-16) – Full technical jazz vocabulary – Performance-track preparation (recitals, SYF support, competitions) – Cross-style versatility (kids who train jazz well learn other styles faster) – Choreographic creativity
Why jazz is undervalued for kids in Singapore
Most parents we talk to think first of hip-hop or ballet. Jazz quietly does some of the most important work for serious dancers:
- It’s the technical bridge between ballet and street styles
- It builds performance presence faster than other forms
- It develops “stage face” — eyes, smile, intent — that transfers to any genre
- Many of our SYF Distinction students train jazz alongside their modern dance CCA
Our jazz credentials
EV Dance jazz is taught by coaches certified through CSTD (Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing) and ATOD (Australia Teacher of Dance), plus overseas training. Master Trainer JJ Chan holds ATOD certifications across Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap, and Street Beats.
