Locking is one of the original funk styles — sharp moves punctuated by dramatic “locks” (pauses), theatrical character, and connection to 1970s disco/funk music. At EV Dance we teach locking as part of the broader street dance family.

What kids learn
- Locking vocabulary (Lock, Point, Wrist Roll, Pacing, Stop’n’Go)
- Funk musicality and rhythm
- Theatrical performance — locking has clowning roots, kids learn to “play” the movement
- Character work — strong identity in the dance, not just steps
- Crossover with hip-hop, popping, and house
Who locking suits
Strong fit: – Kids who love funk and 70s music aesthetic – Kids drawn to theatrical street dance — humour, character, drama – Boys especially (locking has high male participation across Singapore studios) – Cross-trainers in hip-hop wanting to deepen funk knowledge
