Contemporary dance is for the older kids who want depth — emotional vocabulary, choreographic creativity, technique that combines ballet, modern, and athletic floor work. We teach kids contemporary at EV Dance from age 10 onwards.

What kids learn

Beginner Contemporary (ages 10-12) – Movement that flows from one shape to another (vs hitting positions) – Floor work — comfort with falling, rolling, rising – Use of breath in movement – Group composition exercises – Beginning emotional vocabulary

Intermediate (ages 13-15) – Stronger technical work — Graham, Cunningham, Limón influences – Choreographic creation (students learn to choreograph) – Performance pieces with narrative arc – Cross-training with ballet for line and contemporary for fluidity

Advanced / Teen (ages 16+) – Full contemporary repertoire – Composition projects – Audition preparation for vocational schools / DSA-Dance – Performance-track for competitions and showcases

Why contemporary works for older kids

Contemporary requires emotional maturity. A 7-year-old generally can’t access the expressive vocabulary contemporary asks for. By 10-12, most kids can. By 14, kids who’ve been training contemporary often show genuine creative depth.

For families considering DSA-Dance via Modern Dance pathways, contemporary training significantly supports the audition style — most school Modern Dance CCAs use contemporary-style choreography.
