Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) runs a multi-genre DSA-Dance Talent stream — accepting ballet, Chinese, modern, and contemporary candidates — with the highest combined academic + talent bar in the system.
What RGS looks for
RGS expects:
- Top-tier technical level — they recruit dancers who could realistically represent the school at SYF
- Multi-year track record — competition, SYF, or strong CCA evidence is the norm, not the exception
- Academic readiness — RGS is rigorous; the school looks at PSLE projected band as one factor even via DSA
- Articulate self-presentation — interview matters
Threshold
Most successful RGS DSA-Dance candidates hold:
- 5+ years of formal training in their chosen genre
- At least one significant performance / competition placing
- An interview-ready understanding of their own dance journey
Audition format
- Genre-specific audition — combination work in your chosen genre
- Prepared piece — 1-2 minutes
- Panel interview — typically 15-20 minutes with multiple panel members
What to wear
Genre-appropriate: ballet attire for ballet, Chinese dance attire (fitted) for Chinese, etc. Hair tied.
What we’ve observed
RGS is selective in a particular way: they want dancers who are also strong students. A girl with brilliant technique but a struggling academic record may not get the offer. Conversely, a strong academic girl with respectable but not stellar dance technique might.
The “Why dance?” question carries real weight. RGS dance candidates who can speak about dance as part of a broader life vision (not just a hobby) tend to do better.
How EV Dance can help
RGS prep is intensive. We start typically in P5, focus on technique refinement, prepared piece development, and several rounds of mock interview practice. We’ve coached candidates who later joined the RGS Dance CCA — but RGS is the hardest DSA-Dance route in the system, and we’ll be honest about your daughter’s realistic chances after a consultation.
