Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) is the top-of-mind school for DSA-Chinese Dance in Singapore. Their CCA focuses on traditional and contemporary Chinese dance, with the audition designed to test both technique and the speed at which a candidate can absorb new material.

What NYGH looks for

NYGH’s Chinese Dance audition typically tests:

Threshold

NYGH does not strictly require certification, but 3-5 years of structured Chinese dance training is typical. Candidates from a CCA-only background (no external studio) can apply but should be exceptional within that CCA context.

Audition format

What to wear

Traditional Chinese dance attire is appropriate only if explicitly requested. Otherwise: a fitted leotard or top, dance pants/shorts, and Chinese dance shoes (if you have them; regular soft dance shoes otherwise). Hair tied neatly.

What we’ve observed

Pick-up speed is the differentiator. Candidates who can absorb a new combination in 10 minutes and perform it cleanly tend to advance. Candidates who can’t keep up — even if their prepared piece is strong — often don’t.

Music selection matters. Chinese dance pieces set to dramatic, well-known traditional music can feel “safe” but score lower than thoughtful, less-obvious choices.

How EV Dance can help

EV Elites’ Chinese Dance prep focuses on three elements specifically for NYGH-style auditions: shen yun depth, learning-speed drills (new combinations taught against the clock), and prepared piece choreography that suits both your daughter’s technique and her personal expression.
